Explanation of the causes and solutions for oxidation of the external silver layer on ceramics:
A. Reasons for oxidation and blackening:
1. Sulfidation reaction
Silver reacts with sulfur-containing substances in the air (such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide) to form black silver sulfide. This is the main reason for the blackening of the silver layer, and the reaction rate is accelerated in humid and polluted environments.
2. Oxidation reaction
Silver reacts with oxygen to form silver oxide, which initially appears as yellow spots and gradually turns brown-black.
3. Environmental and usage factors
Temperature and pollutants: High-temperature environments (such as bathrooms and kitchens) or contact with sulfur springs and seawater will accelerate the blackening of the silver layer.Chemical substances: Cosmetics, perfumes, and detergents (containing sulfur) that come into direct contact with the silver-plated area can cause rapid localized blackening.

B. Treatment methods after blackening:
1. Daily cleaning methods (for mild oxidation)
• Toothpaste/baking soda polishing method (Apply toothpaste or baking soda paste to a soft cloth, gently rub the blackened area, then rinse with water, and finally dry with a cotton cloth.)
• Silver polishing cloth (Special silver polishing cloths contain polishing powder; simply wiping with the cloth will restore the shine without damaging the ceramic base.)
• White vinegar or cola soaking method (Soak the silver part in a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water or in cola for 30 minutes, then gently brush the crevices with a soft brush, and finally rinse and dry.)

2. Reduction Method
Aluminum Foil and Saltwater Method (Line a bowl with aluminum foil, place the silver-plated ceramic item inside, sprinkle with salt, pour boiling water over the item until it is completely submerged, and remove and dry after ten minutes.)

C. Measures to Prevent Oxidation and Discoloration
1. Isolating from Environmental Pollution and Corrosion
• Store in a sealed bag or wrap in a soft cloth and include a desiccant.
• Keep away from sulfur soap, cosmetics, and other sulfur-containing items.
2. Daily Maintenance
• Gently wipe regularly with a silver polishing cloth to prevent dirt buildup.
• Avoid scratching with hard objects, and dry with a cotton cloth after cleaning.

D. Precautions for Silver-Decorated Ceramics:
Avoid using strong acids (such as concentrated hydrochloric acid) or steel wool, as this may corrode the silver layer or scratch the ceramic glaze.
Silver oxidation is a natural reaction between silver and the environmental medium and is unrelated to product quality. The key is proper maintenance: store in a dry place, away from moisture and sulfur-containing substances, and gently wipe regularly to maintain its luster and keep it bright and white for a long time.
